Where do papillons come from?

From numerous paintings in museums, we know that the continental toy spaniels with hanging ears, known today as phalène, have been present in our regions for centuries. The papillon with upright ears, however, is a relatively modern breed that appeared in the Brussels region at the end of the 19th century. It is Louis Vander Snickt who saw its potential and with great dedication made this breed known to the general public. The first photo of a papillon In 1880, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Belgian independence, a few personalities organised the first international dog show for all breeds in the Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels on 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 July 1880.
